The mixture of grave and gay was admirable. In these papers we find abundant revelations of the spirit and manners of the times. The poetic and generous nature of Joseph Addison (b. 1672) was demonstrated by his zealous criticisms on Milton's "Paradise Lost," which mainly contributed to rescue it from the neglect which it had experienced.
